5 Summer Skin Care Rituals from Provence

The Journal  ·  Summer Skin Care

We've been told that summer is a season of more. More daylight, more travel, more events, more sun. The expansion of warm months is meant to be the antidote to winter's quiet — a time to fill our lives, our calendars, our skin.

And yet, somewhere in the middle of July, the body usually disagrees.

The skin, in particular, has its own intelligence. It registers the heat differently than the mind does. It asks not for more — more products, more scrubs, more elaborate routines — but for less. Less stripping. Less harshness. Less of the things that, in cooler months, felt restorative and now feel depleting.

The skin in summer asks for subtraction, not addition.

"In summer, the smallest rituals are the ones that hold us together."

In Provence, where summers stretch long and dry from June through September, we've inherited five small rituals. None of them complicated. None of them new. All of them quiet acts of subtraction — and of attention — that change how the skin (and the spirit) move through the season.

01. The Unhurried Shower

Heat makes you want to scrub harder, cleanse faster, get out sooner. Resist all of it. A few extra minutes under cool water with a gentle handmade bar does more for summer skin than any product promising to do more. Slowness is the first ritual — and the one most often forgotten.

02. The Morning Rinse, the Evening Cleanse

Cleanse twice — but gently. Once in the morning to start fresh and awake. Once in the evening to wash away sunscreen, salt, sweat, and whatever the day asked of you. Twice is good. Harsh is not. A bar with 72% organic olive oil cleans without ever stripping.

03. The Cooling Ritual

After long sun exposure, the skin asks for something calming. Aloe vera has been used for centuries for exactly this — cooling, soothing, soft. It's the ingredient most associated with relief, and the one we built our most-reordered summer bar around. The third ritual is simple: when skin runs hot, choose what cools it.

04. Care Below the Collar

Most skincare attention goes to the face. But in summer, the neck, chest, shoulders, and back take the most exposure to sun, sweat, and friction. The same care belongs there — the same gentle bar, the same unhurried minutes. The body is not an afterthought.

05. The Nourishing Choice

Drink water — yes — but also choose what touches your skin with care. Bars made with shea butter and organic olive oil cleanse without leaving the skin tight or chalky. Essential oils from the flower fields of Grasse — lemon verbena, orange blossom, monoï — do their work simply by being present in the shower for a few minutes a day. Hydration starts in the shower.

"The smallest rituals, practised with intention, are how the body remembers itself."

The Averal Provence Summer Collection — Monoï, Lemon Verbena, Orange Blossom and Aloe Vera French bar soaps handcrafted in Provence

At Averal Provence, we have spent years crafting bars made by hand in a small village in Provence, with 72% organic olive oil and essential oils from the flower fields of Grasse. Our Summer Collection is built around four scents made for this season: Monoï for warm evenings, Lemon Verbena for bright mornings, Orange Blossom for long afternoons, and Aloe Vera — the one that quietly cools everything it touches.

They are not complicated. They are simply made with care, for women who deserve to feel cared for — especially in the months that ask the most of them.

A small thing. A daily thing. Yours.
